Best Friend Fix lets you show your screen to a friend and, if you choose, let them take over to fix something. That only works if you trust it, so here is plainly what we hold and what we don't.

Your screen and your voice

During a session, the picture of your screen and the sound of your voice travel directly between your computer and your friend's computer, encrypted the whole way. They do not pass through us, and we could not watch or replay a session even if we wanted to. Nothing is recorded, on our side or in the app — no video file, no audio file, no log of what was clicked or typed.

Some home and office networks block a direct connection. When that happens, the encrypted picture and sound are passed along by a relay service we use (Metered) so the session still works. The relay forwards sealed data between the two computers; it does not hold the keys, so it cannot see your screen or hear you either.

What our server holds while you connect

To introduce two computers to each other, our server briefly holds the session code, the 6-digit passcode, and the technical details the two computers need to find each other (which includes their network addresses). This is kept in the server's memory only — it is never written to a file — and it is thrown away when the session ends, or within two minutes if a computer stops responding.

Worth knowing, because it is true of any direct connection like this: when you connect, your friend's computer learns your network address, and yours learns theirs. That is how the two find each other. Connect with people you know.

If you send feedback

The feedback form is the only place we ask you for anything. When you send it, we keep the date, the boxes you ticked, your message, your email address, and the name your browser reports about itself. It is stored in a private file on our server that is not reachable from the web.

We use your email to reply to you, and to let you know when there is a new version or a new app worth knowing about. We do not sell it, rent it, or share it with anyone. If you want it removed, say so and it is removed — no questions.

So that nobody can flood the form, the server also remembers the network addresses that submitted recently, in memory, for about ten minutes. Those are not saved with your feedback.

On your own device

Your browser keeps a local copy of the app's files so it loads quickly and still opens on a shaky connection. That copy sits on your device and is never sent anywhere. Clearing your browser data removes it.

The Windows app is the same website in its own window, plus the part that lets your friend move your mouse and type — and that part only ever runs after you say yes to a prompt on your own screen. It does not watch you the rest of the time, and it sends us nothing.

Children

Best Friend Fix is not aimed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly keep information from them. If a child has sent us feedback, tell us and we will delete it.

Changes

If this page changes in a way that matters, the date at the top changes with it.
